No frills Manix 2 for beginners

This is my 2nd spyderco that I bought from TA. I would say first and foremost that TA's service is very top notch and consistent. Don't hesitate to buy from TA.

Now about this Manix 2 model, it comes with a S110V steel blade that is known to be very hard (edge retentive) and durable and also offer a good level of rust resistance. I also found it very sharp out of the box and has great satin finish on it. Handle is made of FRCP (fiber reinforced plastic in layman's term) and has minimal steel lining (if ever you will call it that) making this a very light pocket knife considering the size of the blade it offers. The pocket/belt clip is a wire clip type (not deep carry type) that was placed so that it will give you a good grip when pulling it out of your pocket but makes it relatively invisible while still tucked inside. The construction is pinned, except for the pivot and clip screws. This enables you to adjust the tension of the pivot and switch the clip placement respectively.

A main con about this primarily is its pinned construction. This makes it very hard to maintain in the long run since you cannot fully disassemble the knife. For a knife that will not receive warranty servicing provided by Spyderco (USA) since it is bought in the Philippines, this might cause some issues so make sure to oil this regularly with a pen applicator like Tuf glide or Nano Oil to prevent rusting. Another thing is that the ball-bearing lock system is very stiff out of the box (even if you add oil to it). This is caused by the spring which you cannot modify since you can't take this apart. But in time, the whole system will wear well and it will provide a smooth action (I can now engage and disengage the blade just by actuating the lock with a wrist-flick).

Overall, in a larger perspective, I believe this is one of the best spyderco knives out there. The weight is just beautiful for EDC and the blade is just an all-rounder.

If you don't mind the pinned construction and you don't plan to disassemble your knives at all, this will be bang for your buck.
